The Student Union Building (SUB) has been a favorite on-campus spot for students since it was built in 1948, and for good reason. The SUB has everything Baylor students dream of—Chick-Fil-A, Common Grounds, a game room to hang out with friends, access to mailboxes to get those care packages from home and, of course, it is home to the beloved Dr. Pepper Hour.

But, while many students keep their eyes on the main floor of the Barfield Drawing Room as they get their Dr. Pepper Hour float every Tuesday, the corridors are where I can be found with my sweet treat. The Barfield Drawing Room has two raised platforms connected to each side of the main floor that are lined with comfy couches and armchairs, beautiful art, and huge windows that offer great vantage points for beautiful campus shots.

The cozy couches combined with the sunlight beaming in from the giant windows creates the perfect recipe for a quick power nap—I mean study session—between classes. Rooms full of similar setups line the hallways of the second and third floor of the SUB, and students can be found at all times of day studying, dozing off or enjoying meals they picked up downstairs.

The couches of the Barfield Drawing Room are special to me because of the countless friends I have sat with there. My friends and I have spontaneously met for Dr. Pepper Hour, shamelessly taken mirror selfies on the antique gold mirrors that line the walls and enjoyed people watching while looking out over the SUB Bowl below.

While the corridors are certainly not the star of the Barfield Drawing Room, they hold a special significance to my time at Baylor. The couches are where I decided to pursue journalism as my major, where I have spent hours on the phone calling home and where I like to decompress after a tough exam.

The SUB is and will always be one of many students’ favorite places on campus, but the Barfield Drawing Room couches are certainly the hidden gems of the building. I know it might be hard to leave the comfort of the food court and coffee lounge of the first floor, but the second and third floor are so worth exploring beyond the couple minutes it takes to get a Dr. Pepper float.
