Hey Parents!
Getting connected and feeling like they belong can be one of the greatest challenges that students face in college. It can so often feel like everyone else has found their life-long friends and people to be with 24/7.
One of my favorite things about Baylor is how dedicated the university is to getting students connected with organizations and opportunities where they can truly thrive. There are over 300 official student organizations on campus. 300! Everything from Student Government, improv groups, special interest groups (like the Brunch Club, which sounds delicious), service organizations, and the "Whatever" club that seeks out whatever seems interesting to them. Most of your students were extremely active in some sort of interest in high school, so why should that stop once they hit college? It shouldn't!
So now you might be asking, "What do I do if my student doesn't know what they are interested in or where they want to connect?" GREAT QUESTION! Baylor has Student Involvement Specialists that can help identify pathways to get involved based on a number of factors. Your student can chat with a specialist by appointment through OrgSync, Baylor's Student Organization portal.
Your student doesn't have to sign up for everything. Maybe they find just one group that interests them. Just encourage them to take the risk, reach out, and GO! Encourage them to take every opportunity to be in community with people walking their same walk. The worst that could happen is that they will discover that they are interested in other things, but most likely, they'll just have fun.
